Every 8th of December, the people of Lyons arrange lanterns at their windows before going out into the illuminated city. Others, meanwhile, follow the procession in honour of the Virgin Mary as it advances towards Fourvière Basilica.

These traditional illuminations have given rise to the "Fête des Lumières" – a festival of lights spanning four evenings in December. Devoted to artists who work with light, this major European event now attracts over four million visitors to Lyons.
