Exploring Narbonne, Rome’s biggest ambassador outside Italy.

Narbonne's history has always been linked to water – that of the sea, of the River Aude and of the impressive Oeillal de Montlaurès. The root NAR, established so long ago, means river, and is to be found today in a variety of forms: Néro, Naro, Narbo, Narbona, Narbouno, Narbonne.

Narbonne was founded in 118BC, and since that time has remained an obligatory port of call between Italy and Spain, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and the Massif Central and the Pyrenees. Ancient Narbonne - the first Roman colony outside Italy – played a key role for several centuries. Today, vestiges of this long-ago civilisation are to be found in the ground below Narbonne: a statue of Silene near the railway station; and vestiges of Roman villas at Clos de la Lombarde, whose walls were decorated with Pompeian frescos. Not far from Place Bistan, near to the old Forum, the Horreum, a former warehose, still boasts its original architecture. A monumental jewel unique in all of France is to be found in the town centre, composed of the Arch Bishops' Palace and the Cathedral of Saint-Just-Saint-Pasteur. Further monuments are also worth a visit : Maison des trois nourrices, Église Saint-Paul avec grenouille dans le bénitier, Halles de style Baltard, Maison Charles Trenet, Parc des sports et de l'amitié, Narbonne-Plage...
